Delighted to exhibit 'Lifelines' and ‘Core Femme’ in The Future Is Female Exhibition at The Garrison Chapel.
Entry is free and no booking required.

8 March – 6 April 2024
Tuesday-Friday: 11am-4pm
Saturday: 11:30am-4pm

Coinciding with International Women’s Day, The Future is Female exhibition by The Art Link aims to showcase the exceptional of female sculptors, both established and emerging, while addressing the long standing gender disparity in the art world. The exhibition features 18 female sculptors and 40 works of art, offering a diverse and thought-provoking exploration of contemporary female sculpture.

Lifelines

This stainless steel sculpture unveils the innate beauty and strength of the female form. Its exposed multilayered surface mirrors the complexity and depth of the inner self, while exuding a sense of power and resilience. Standing tall and proud, the sensual figure pays homage to the timeless elegance of ancient caryatids, embodying their grace and endurance. Drawing inspiration from Art Deco designs, the sculpture's minimal yet elegant lines and fluid shapes evoke a sense of timeless beauty.

Core Femme

‘Core Femme' stands tall, a symbol of strength and resilience. The stainless steel exposed multilayered surface reflects the inner self and beauty of the female form. The sensual female figure stands strong and tall, redolent of the caryatids of ancient architecture. Linear shapes and fluid lines inspired by Art Deco designs are minimal yet elegant.

Moncrieff Bray Gallery Summer Exhibition (12 May - 24 June 2023)

Exhibition, SculptureCristina Schek

Delighted to show my work with the wonderful Moncrieff Bray Gallery in Petworth, Sussex, as part of their Summer Exhibition (12 May - 24 June 2023).

The centrepiece is a more recent version of ’The Diver’ which was first commissioned for the Olympic village in 2012. You'll also have the opportunity to see the ‘Emergence’ figures, which were initially installed at the Chelsea Barracks and feature abstracted human forms interwoven into shapes that evoke the natural rock formations of the Western Cape. Additionally, for the first time ever, the maquettes for the Emergence series will be on public display, providing a unique insight into my creative process and thought patterns.

Placing a Spotlight on Female Creatives: Chelsea Barracks Unveils its Third Sculpture Trail

Exhibition, SculptureCristina Schek

The third iteration of the Chelsea Barracks Sculpture Trail has arrived. Curated by Marshall Murray the public art walk and free outdoor exhibition showcase works by world-class female artists, including Jill Berelowitz, Anna Gillespie, Louise Plant and Zeus Li. The Sculpture Trail welcomes the public to explore art amongst the architecture and public grounds, embracing the heritage, creativity and community of Chelsea Barracks.

To promote and create equality within the art world we must recognise the female artists who have paved the way and represent the future of the industry. Chelsea Barracks champions and celebrates the work of female creatives, providing a platform in a central London public space to showcase their work. This installation will raise awareness on the challenges faced by women in the contemporary art world and encourage discussion around representation, collaboration and inspirations. Female artists have often struggled to have their work recognised in the male dominated field of sculpture. Of the $196.6 billion spent at art auctions between 2008 and 2019, work produced by women accounted for only $4 billion, or around 2% of the total sales. (Source: Forbes) What unites these artists showcased in the trail is their empowerment in exploring the human form and how this representation has changed over time and its relationship within the context, society and environment. Females represented in sculptures have often been figureheads or sexualised forms, so it is important for authentic representations to be visible and championed. The selected artists have all carved their place in contemporary sculpture, creating ambiguous, challenging and creative forms.

GUNNERA LEAVES (Polished Bronze)

Visitors entering Chelsea Barracks from the Chelsea Bridge Road entrance will be greeted by the sculpture Gunnera Leaves within the water feature, by Jill Berelowitz; whose work featured in Phase I of the Sculpture Trail. Berelowitz was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and has become one of London's most innovative sculptors, known for her bronze, steel and optical resin works. The themes of rebirth, growth and progression are core to Jill’s art, fitting for the Spring launch of this Sculpture Trail.

TIMEPIECE (bronze)

Jill Berelowtiz’s pieces within the trail explore natural shapes and perceptions of femininity; Gunnera Leaves is a bold, vibrant display of nature coming together and Timepiece, positioned in Bourne Walk, explores the beauty of the female form, Berelowitz’s belief that this only gets better with age both empowers and inspires and is a contemporary take on a classic art motif. There is a subtlety to the form that means it almost blends in with the backdrop, emerging gradually as one approaches and encouraging visitors to closely take in their surroundings on the trail.

PERSEPHONE (bronze)

Persephone by Jill Berelowitz takes pride of place in the culinary garden of Mulberry Square standing tall amongst the greenery. Persephone is a recreation of a pomegranate tree in full bronze, this contemporary reworking of the Greek myth celebrates her as the eternal Goddess of Spring.

GAIA (bronze)

Another of Berelowitz’s pieces inspired by Greek mythology is Gaia, which visitors will come across when walking from Mulberry to Whistler Square. The Goddess of Earth in art is presented as the mother and nurturer of all life and Berelowitz has given us a modern retelling through her abstracted female bronze torso that shows women to be both flawed and perfect.

GOLDEN GIRL (bronze)

The contemporary take on female nude figures in Golden Girl showcases women as confident and multifaceted, challenging perceptions of being sensual or gilded objects. Golden Girl is a brand new piece of work by Jill Berelowitz and is being launched at the Chelsea Barracks sculpture trail.

“Marshall Murray is thrilled to curate the third edition of the Chelsea Barracks Sculpture Trail, showcasing some truly incredible contemporary female artists. Alongside Chelsea Barracks we recognise the importance of championing and celebrating female creatives. It has been genuinely inspiring that the development is engaged and keen to use their space to provide a platform for both hugely successful, established sculptors and the next generation of emerging female artists.” Oliver Hawkins, Director at Marshall Murray

The photos were arranged for Marshall Murray by Jack Hobhouse.

The Dorchester Sphere

Announcement, Behind The Scenes, SculptureCristina Schek

THE DORCHESTER SPHERE  IS A NEW SCULPTURE BY JILL BERELOWITZ, COMMISSIONED BY THE DORCHESTER COLLECTION AS A CELEBRATION IN THE PLATINUM JUBILEE YEAR OF HER LATE MAJESTY QUEEN ELIZABETH II.

The Dorchester Hotel is the epicentre of London, an international city of glamourous fun, thriving energy and timeless spirit. This iconic hotel has hosted royalty since the turn of the twentieth century, including her late majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Dorchester Hotel has a longstanding connection to the Royal Family, hosting life events and celebrations throughout the decades, including the Queen’s engagement to Prince Phillip.

The sculpture is an abstract interpretation of the earth, organic and sophisticated in equal measure. The surface is covered in an organic relief of the world’s land masses, with an inscription upon its equator which reads: ‘The Dorchester stands tall as a cherished landmark of our times, an enduring keeper of London’s bold spirit and a welcome home for those who make the world turn’.

To celebrate this shared history, the Dorchester Hotel has commissioned a new, large-scale public sculpture in honour of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. This new work is a majestic, imposing 2.6 meters tall sculpture of a globe. Cast in bronze, with intriguing interplays of patinated and a high shine surface, this new, impressive work will stand as a celebration of the Queen’s life and service to the country.

The dynamic energy of the Dorchester is epitomised in the iconic globe. The rotating sphere captures its global spirit, each timeless in their own way, and symbols of steadfastness in a changing world.

An international sculptor, Jill’s work highlights many universal themes; the feminine, movement, and dynamism, universal and continuous like the circle of life. The Dorchester Sphere is continuously changing, yet constant to ensure its longevity, epitomising the elegant DNA and sophisticated essence of the Dorchester.

Jill’s signature style captures the sophisticated elegance and timelessness of the Dorchester in this new, intriguing piece which itself will become a new London landmark.

CoExistence at Sladmore Contemporary (15th June – 23 July 2021)

Exhibition, SculptureCristina Schek

CoExistence is an environmental art exhibition featuring 100 life size lantana elephants modelled on wild herds that live in the Nilgiri Hills in Southern India. They have been created deep in the jungles of Tamil Nadu, by the indigenous communities who live in close proximity to their real-life counterparts.

As the elephants make their way around the globe, they will tell the story of our crowded planet, the effect of human encroachment on wild spaces and the inspiring ways we can coexist with all the other living beings that make our world magical – from tigers and badgers to nightingales and elephants.

Funds raised from sculpture sales will be directed to grass-roots organisations across India that allow people and wildlife to coexist peacefully.

Sladmore Contemporary is delighted to collaborate with Co-Existence this summer and this is where Jill Berelowitz will be debuting her new series of Baby Elephants.

Jill Berelowitz The Cynthia Corbett Gallery, Carry On Creativity on Artsy.png

“Johannesburg-born, London-based Jill Berelowitz developed her passion for art at a very young age and studied from the age of twelve under renowned Finnish artist Karen Jarozynska. After graduating from Johannesburg School of Art, she set up her own studio in Durban and worked and taught there until moving to London in 1985, where she still has a teaching and working studio.
In London, Berelowitz has established herself as one of the City’s most innovative and prominent sculptors. Amongst her extensive portfolio of high-profile works are “Core Femme” installed outside Charing Cross Hospital, “Pair Oar” at Henley-on-Thames, The Investec Challenge rugby trophy at Twickenham. Other works are installed at Goldsmith’s Guild, Unilever and Old Mutual.

Jill makes ambitious large scale works that articulate her personal experiences, infused with a positive and often spiritual feel. Many of her sculptures incorporate symbols of a talismanic importance to the artist: an elephant, the tree of life, circles and spherical forms. Other works evoke the human figure formed with qualities of elegance and lyrical movement, often elongated and abstracted in the manner of the traditional tribal sculpture of her homeland.

Jill Berelowitz has exhibited extensively at high profile galleries and exhibitions including Sotheby’s and Christie’s, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Hampton Court, and Heathrow Terminal 5. Other projects include Westminster Council’s ‘City of Sculpture’ programme for the entrance to the London 2012 Olympic Village. She was also one of the Judges for the tenth anniversary edition of Young Masters Art Prize in 2019.”

Bronze Christmas Tree | Press Release

Press, Sculpture, Exhibition, OsmosisJill Berelowitz
Jill's Christmas Tree, photo credit Cristina Schek (2).jpg

In a unique new commission as part of the ‘Osmosis’ Sculpture exhibition, 45 Park Lane has asked Jill Berelowitz to create a magnificent Christmas Tree for the hotel foyer.

The tree will be unveiled at an exclusive event on 6th December 2018.

The trunk, branches and twigs are individually cast and welded together to reproduce the shape of a traditional Christmas fir tree.

Standing at 3.6m high, the tree is constructed from over 1,500 branches and twigs and in excess of 500 bronze pines cast in three bronze alloys, white, copper and gold bronze; each hanging from sumptuous ribbons to complement the hotel's interior.

The tree is adorned with strands of tiny fairy lights, and topped with a golden-bronze star, held aloft by a celebratory male and female figures.

Jill's tree celebrates the coming together of family, the light and hope of a bejewelled Christmas, and the regeneration it promises for the New Year.

This unique piece is the only Christmas Tree to have ever been constructed entirely from bronze, and adds a magical spectacle to enjoy during the Festive season.

Jill created the Christmas Tree at the Morris Singer Foundry in Hampshire.

'Osmosis' continues at 45 Park Lane until end of January 2019. Courtesy of Ackerman Studios in association with Dorcester Collection.

'Osmosis' | Jill Berelowitz Solo Exhibition at 45 Park Lane | 8 November 2018 - end of January 2019

Announcement, Exhibition, Sculpture, Press, OsmosisJill Berelowitz

Delighted to announce that I will be exhibiting a newly created body of works titled ‘Osmosis’ highlighting themes of positivity and regeneration. My Solo Exhibition will be running 8 November 2018 – end of January 2019 at 45 Park Lane, courtesy of Ackerman Studios in association with Dorchester Collection.

The new sculptures will be released on Instagram and Facebook. Stay tuned!

Across place and time, this joyful exhibition celebrates womanhood and nature with lyricism, elegance and light. A collection of ideas, memories and experience, synthesised into a body of work exploring femininity, light and the natural world.

Join Jill Berelowitz in a journey to a world of beauty, life and light.

Jill Berelowitz Osmosis, Solo Exhibition.jpg

In her newest work, in which patinated bronze panels are adorned with three dimensional tree branches, artist Jill Berelowitz captures a mystical, abstracted landscape that evokes the experience of light through the trees familiar to anyone who has explored the English woodland at dusk. Originally from South Africa, these new works symbolise a cultural osmosis for the artist, absorbing the sensation of the English landscape into a practice that frequently draws on themes inspired the vastness of the African continent.

This exhibition demonstrates the artist's personal movement across geographies; tumbleweed that cycles across the landscape, bodies fused into a globe the shape of a rock eroded into a smoothly beautiful form by the elements and time. This examination of the transience of life is at once personal to the artist, and speaks to universal human experience.

Trained as a sculptor, Jill makes ambitious, large scale works that articulate her personal experiences, infused with positive and often spiritual feel. Many of the works are deeply personal, incorporating symbols of a talismanic importance to the artist; an elephant, the tree of life, circles and spherical forms, a feather, a dachshund. Many others evoke the human figure formed with qualities of elegance and lyrical movement, often elongated and abstracted in the manner of the traditional tribal sculpture of her homeland. The female figure is of particular importance to the artist, a recurring motif that is celebrated in this exhibition during the Year of the Woman.

The human figure is a recurring motif in Jill's work, emblematic of the interest in beauty that preoccupies the artist. Her figurative forms are at once specific and universal - at times they signify human movement and transition, at others they become figures from classical myth, becoming the personification of natural forms, from tiny seed pods, to the mother of dawn in 'Aurora'. A second recurring image in Jill's work is that of the tree as a form that embodies life, the rhythms of nature and the markings of time.

Although much of her work is cast in bronze, Jill often uses other materials including carbon fibre and crystal resin to explore her ideas. The resin in particular allows the artist to explore her use of light, the colourful, transparent material allowing natural light to flood through and refract. This sublime phenomenon symbolises the luminosity that is embodied by all of Jill's work. Light and life pulsate throughout, offering hope and positive energy.

Later update: London Live art critic James Nicholls from Maddox Gallery reviews my solo exhibition ‘Osmosis’, on view at 45 Park Lane till end of January 2019.

'Tumbleweed' in Alexandra Noble's 'Health and Wellbeing Garden' at RHS Hampton Court Flower Show

Sculpture, AnnouncementJill Berelowitz

Designer Alexandra Noble intends to inspire deep thinking and a sense of being in the moment with her Health and Wellbeing Garden. Fabulous florals and gorgeous garden aiming to encourage getting lost in the activity of walking or simply sitting and enjoying the beauty of the space around you via a continuous path with no start or end point. The  visitor moves through the space, which is defined by motion rather than walls, without a destination. The aim of the garden is to slow one’s pace and mind and encourage a sense of being in the moment.

The sculpture in the garden is a piece called ‘Tumbleweed’ by Jill Berelowitz, a North London sculptor of South African descent.

‘Tumbleweed’ is a branching bronze orb in which ten seed bearing figures are nestled and illustrates that ‘at our core, we are eternal beings capable of compassion and immense creative resolve and that home is anywhere the heart can flourish.’

Along the path one can appreciate the filigree forms of umbellifers and gossamer fennel leaves. Awareness of subtleties such as plant movement in a breeze and petals backlit by the sun are heightened.

The layout of the garden is denominated by the path’s route, which loops and circles to contain a circular water trough and round of thyme. Hazy structure is provided by plants such as ammi and valerian while creeping thyme and camomile feature as delicately scented low-growing elements.

Further reading: http://alexandranoble.com/rhs-hampton-2018/

Take home tips:

  • Include a place to sit and surround the area with soft planting that envelopes and comforts you
  • Create a circular or meandering path - encouraging you to walk and forget your thoughts

RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, supported by Viking Cruises, is world's largest annual flower show, stretching over 34 acres. Flanking both sides of the Long Water at Hampton Court Palace, you can enjoy Show Gardens, the Rose Marquee, Floral Marquee, plant pavilions and a variety of talks, demonstrations and exhibits. The show opens to the public 2-8 July 2018.
